Luck should not be part of your interview. Prepare in advance to increase your confidence and professionalism!

Some of this advice and these tips might seem like common sense but please take a moment the night before your interview to read them and think through the interview that lies ahead of you.

Attending an interview is like going on stage. It is vital that you give off the right impressions from the minute you walk into the situation. The interviewer will spot things about you that you have never even thought of. In almost all non-successful interviews the interviewer has made up their mind in the first two minutes of speaking to you.

An interview is a two way meeting. It is an opportunity for you to impress a future employer with your relevant skill sets. Remember this though; we do not want you to get into something where you would be out of your depth. So honesty and integrity are vital in an interview. If you think you have development holes then don’t be afraid to talk about them. It will come across in a better light than being arrogant about yourself…

Hints and Tips!

Take a moment the night before your interview to read these:

  1. Wear business attire- Dress for the job you want not necessarily the one you have got. If you are attending an interview for a position that does not require business dress i.e. a Technicians role. What is wrong with showing the interviewer your professionalism by wearing business dress? Don’t be tempted to over dress though, remember business dress not high fashion dress!
  2. Make sure you are on time for the interview. We will provide you with a full interview address 24 hours before an interview so make sure you know your route and its timings. Don’t forget about rush hour traffic, schools etc.
  3. In the interview remember your posture. Don’t slouch and keep good eye contact. More than 2 seconds of continuous eye contact can be uncomfortable for the recipient. Try it with someone close to you…
  4. Have a list of questions for the interviewer. In your first interview remember that you want to know about the organisation, the role and the expectations. This allows you to make sure you feel up to the role and want to progress your career. At this stage there is no need to talk about package, hours, benefits etc.
  5. Keep your energy levels up, listen to the questions and answer them honestly. Your questions need to be open ended so as to engage the interviewer. People like people with people skills…..
  6. At the end of your interviewyou should thank the interviewer for their time and ask them if there is anything that they think you have not covered in enough detail to convince them to consider you for this role? This is a way of making sure you have come across in the best possible light.
